Company HistoryThe TJX Companies, Inc. evolved from the Zayre department store chain that was founded in 1956. Zayre sold their chain of stores to Ames in 1988, which later had a name-change to the TJX Companies, Inc. The company operated the T.J. Maxx store in the United States until 1990 when is expanded into Canada by purchasing five Winners stores. Two years later, it launched HomeGoods in the United States. They increased their international presence in 1994 by launching the T.K. Maxx brand in the United Kingdom. That brand continued to expand throughout Europe. In 1995, the TJX Companies, Inc. acquired Marshalls, and soon after the company was recognized as one of the 500 largest companies in the United States.
The TJX Companies, Inc. continued their strong growth with A.J. Wright in the United States, HomeSense in Canada, and finally Bob’s Store in New England. In 2010, they decided to close the A.J. Wright stores. In 2015, the TJX Companies, Inc. acquired the Trade Secret chain in Australia and entered that market for the first time. To this day, they continue to thrive in a variety of economic and retail environments. |
